Why Choose Dental Anxiety?

patient asleep during her dental procedureSedation dentistry offers numerous benefits for patients who experience dental anxiety. It can help you feel more relaxed and less aware of the sights, sounds, and smells of the dental office. Sedation can also make longer procedures seem to pass more quickly and can minimize discomfort. By reducing anxiety, sedation dentistry enables you to receive the necessary dental care to maintain your oral health, ultimately contributing to your overall well-being.

If you experience dental anxiety or are concerned about an upcoming procedure, we encourage you to discuss sedation dentistry options with Dr. Harrison. She will listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and help you determine the best approach to ensure a comfortable and positive dental experience.

Laughing Gas

To help you feel comfortable and relaxed during your dental appointment, Penterson & Booth Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers nitrous oxide, a safe and gentle sedative often called "laughing gas." Administered through a comfortable nasal mask, it effectively eases anxiety and promotes a sense of calm throughout your treatment. The effects of nitrous oxide are mild and dissipate rapidly once the gas is discontinued, allowing you to return to your regular activities immediately after your visit. If dental visits make you nervous, please inquire about whether nitrous oxide could help you feel more at ease.

IV Sedation

For patients who experience significant dental anxiety or are undergoing more complex or lengthy procedures, Penterson & Booth Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers intravenous (IV) sedation to ensure a completely comfortable and stress-free experience. Administered and closely monitored by trained professionals, IV sedation induces a deeper state of relaxation, often referred to as "twilight sleep." During IV sedation, you will be conscious but deeply relaxed and less aware of your surroundings or the dental work being performed. The effects of IV sedation take longer to wear off than nitrous oxide, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. If you have high levels of dental anxiety or are facing extensive treatment, please discuss the option of IV sedation with Dr. Harrison to determine if it is right for you.
